Despite being a long time ago and far away, I remember experiencing my very first fireworks show. Best of all, I remember the anticipation and what I thought I was about to see.
To understand this story fully, picture yourself as a pre-school child being prepared for the noise and the flashes of fireworks in the sky. I knew I was in for something good, but I wasn’t sure what.
Even as an adult, I occasionally misinterpret what someone says. As I recall, we were told that fireworks would explode into something very beautiful and full of colors. Okay, I can picture that. However, one person (who shall remain nameless) told me that I would actually see a full red, white and blue American flag flying in the sky – made from fireworks. So, that’s what I waited for … and waited and waited.
That never happened, of course. But, I was impressed as we watched sky rockets and an aerial show that created a truly stunning exhibition.
By the time I was a teenager, I was satisfied with sparklers, noise makers and snakes. Does anyone remember the fireworks smoking snakes? My father hated them, because they made a big black spot on the curb or the driveway where we lit them and watched them curl and flash. They also smelled about as bad as a rotten egg. But, boy did we have fun!
Be safe and careful this weekend. Fireworks are beautiful, but are best when handled by the experts. Even then, accidents occasionally happen. Hopefully, you’ll be satisfied with a backyard party with family and friends. What could possibly go wrong with a barbecue and a few hamburgers? I can hear you laughing all the way over here! Have a Happy 4th of July Weekend.
